Artist statement & bio

Sharon McCarthy’s practice explores the physical and conceptual possibilities of material.

She uses her awareness of what painting is to interrogate the medium’s often contradictory relationship to representation. These two and three dimensional “paint-things” question themes of failure, alchemy, time, materiality and entropy. A playful and experimental approach composes curious situations which use video and site-specific installation. The works have an initial basis in nature through the visceral use of flowing liquid, but then challenge this by their artificiality.

Originally from Deelish, Co. Waterford, Sharon now lives and works in Cork City, and has recently finished an MA in Art & Process (2013) and Honors Degree in Fine Art (2005). As an artist and art-organiser, I have participated in several local, national and international projects which include – Scale Factor, The Guesthouse Cork; Sulumuc Collaborative Project, Tactic Gallery Cork; Flip, Cork; OutBox, Final MA exhibition, Cork;   In The Black, The Black Mariah, Cork; Idionumina, Kilkenny; (un)doing, Wandesford Quay Gallery, Cork; Have you seen a monkey?, Banagher, Offaly; Right Place, Right Space?, Dublin; Backwater Twenty10, Crawford Gallery, Cork; Waiting in the Wings 2, Maastricht, Netherlands; iD, Gorzow, Poland; ±Plusminus, Oland, Sweden & Cork.
